What Happens If I Don’t Get A Backflow Test Done When Required By The City?

It is an offence to not get a backflow test done every year. If you don’t, you could be fined in the range of $250 to $10,000 per day for each day you’re late in doing the test. In an extreme case, the City could cut off water to your property.

What Is Backflow?

Any undesirable reversal of flow of water or mixtures of water and other liquids, gases or other substances due to backpressure or backsiphonage into the distribution pipes of the potable supply of water from any source.

What is a Backflow Prevention Device?

Any effective assembly used to prevent backflow into a potable water system installed by backflow testers.

Potable Water?

Water from any source which has been investigated by the health agency having jurisdiction, and which has been approved for human consumption.

Backpressure?

Any elevation of pressure in the downsream piping system above the supply pressure at the point of consideration, which would cause or tend to cause a reversal of the normal direction of flow.

Backsiponage?

A form of backflow due to a reduction on system pressure, which caused a sub- atmospheric pressure to exist in the water system.

Why does it have to be test?

Backflow prevention assembly needs to be tested at least once a year by a certified backflow tester to maintain its proper functionality.

Who mandates the testing?

Either the local health department or the water purveyor.
